It's great to see a lot of people subscribing here! I'm Lells, you might know me as Lellela from Reddit, or even oldmansutton from Bay12Games. Welcome all! I started this magazine because I'm pretty much done rewarding Reddit with content when I don't agree with their behavior and poor choices. So the idea of a decentralized network is a move back in the direction where we the users have more control. For now, this is a platform I believe in. Trust is earned. I'm guessing most of you agree with some of this since you're here. I'm still learning about it with all of you. I never really wanted to be a moderator. But I love Dwarf Fortress with all my heart, and I know there are others of you out there who share that love, so I wanted us to have a space to be welcome and have a community, and share with each other. To help make both the fediverse AND a community within it a reality, I decided to make this magazine. I can't do this alone, nor do I want to. We're DF players, we are engineers... we are dwarfs and we are digging a hole! What do we want our community to look like? What information do we want to provide? What rules do we want to have? We ARE a community, so let's decide together. Thanks everybody, and strike the earth! TL;DR - Diggy diggy hole \*Edited to remove rambling introduction

Kickin' off a new series, so I thought I'd share it with my fediverse compadres. I’m also looking for fediverse alternatives for streamers … I’m not really concerned about monetization or anything like that, just looking for alternate places to host my content and someday break the youtube chains.

crosspost from: https://jlai.lu/post/540712 These are renders of the construction of the main building of Ikûl Tikis, a Ziggurat dedicated to the god of death of this world. The fortress is populated only by vampires after this same god cursed a dwarf in its temple. ![](https://jlai.lu/pictrs/image/1babab5a-95a5-42a4-b087-f9d82d7753db.jpeg) ![](https://jlai.lu/pictrs/image/59873722-4fbc-4488-9ef3-10f3972d67a5.jpeg) ![](https://jlai.lu/pictrs/image/0bd1faef-3b5e-41bc-bc25-b0f303eae182.jpeg) ![](https://jlai.lu/pictrs/image/5656c708-4511-4631-840d-e68844f487ab.jpeg) ![](https://jlai.lu/pictrs/image/78842c44-3d5f-4771-b929-6bf5a4444ac3.jpeg) In real life, Ziggurat are large temples built by Summerians. Some dubious sources says that they worshiped gods of mountains, and when living away from mountains they would build these temples as literal mountains, which is the most dwarven thing ever. The 3D export was done with [Vox Uristi](https://plule.github.io/vox-uristi) (my own software) and rendered with [MagicaVoxel](https://ephtracy.github.io/). If you have any question or suggestion about Vox Uristi or the fortress, please go ahead! edit: I can't manage to construction timelapse itself - oops, [it can be seen on reddit though](https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/161rkru/7_years_timelapse_of_the_contruction_of_ik%C3%BBl/)

Lordwall sits at the foot of a giant glacier in a high mountain valley. The small microclimate this location enjoys has proven to be stimulating to all dwarves spirituality. Lordwall has just established an organized religion, devoted to the worship of Rîsen, the Goddess of mountains and caverns. Thikut Blowgirder has assumed the role of Sacred Shadow, Rîsen's earthly prophet. While many of our dwarves worship this deity, not everybody subscribes to Thikut's teachings. Time will tell if Lordwall's inhabitants heed the prophecies being foretold, or if division will threaten our fledgling civilization.

I played DF for many years, but it was a little bit too much FUN until I started using Dwarf Therapist. I forget when this was, but the last time I struck the earth and downloaded a new update, DT had stopped being compatible. (maybe 2018-ish?) I was bummed because although things were significantly less fun with DT - I had learned to do lots of unfun things like create garbage disposals and training rooms, do interesting shit with magma, discreetly kill human trading delegations (and sell all their stuff), and create a few high level artifacts *before* the dwarf who was in a weird mood went on a homicidal rampage. Or just murder him in a trap. We managed moody dwarfs on a case by case basis. The hives were even working. Fortress life was good. There were no aquifers. Creeping eldritch horrors were mostly confined to the sealed and reinforced cavern levels. Booze was plentiful, songs were being written, thrones were being engraved, rooms were furnished with elaborate beds and chests, and discontent was low. This was also many eons ago, which leads me to a couple of questions. 1. Is there a current version of Dwarf Therapist that works with the latest DF version? 2. Is DT even necessary for the latest version of the game? (I've never used tile sets, so I'm OK with the standard ASCII graphics) 3. Recommendations about the best FAQ or Wiki? 4. Should I continue to torture my co-worker by describing it as "sort of like Minecraft, but with a bit of a learning curve?"

Some legends mode for North Bridge's world. I will forever wonder how the heck the baby king encountered the giant alligator.

Talk about your current fortress - trials, tribulations, successes, and failures. This would also be a great place to post your long fiction of your fortress. Most recently, my fort, Cobaltshowers, fell to a mistake when placing a giantess in my blood-sport arena. This mistake saw the giant, and swarms of goblins, released while the bridge to my fort was still open. My militia could not organize in time, and the swarms overtook me. Good times!

Do people here use this? I hadn't until just recently. I had a couple squads stuck on a mission and one suggested fix was DFHack. Seems to have worked!

Release notes for 50.09 (June 28, 2023): In this release, we're updating the engine from SDL to SDL2, and there are many optimizations to go along with it. Aside from the optimizations, SDL2 is also the stepping stone to ports. We have Linux compiling and playable; it just needs some testing. Moreover, there is now a(n experimental) multithreading option in the game settings that makes the game even faster! We also have some new individual tree graphics, and an update to grass ramps as well. This has been mostly the hard work of Putnam! Meanwhile I've started up on adventure mode - the long work of updating menus and adding audio has begun! Hopefully we'll have some progress to show their soon, as we continue updating fortress mode as well. **New stuff** * Updated to SDL2 and made many surrounding changes. Various performance gains! * Experimental multithreading is available from game settings. **Graphics additions/changes** * Some more trees now have individual graphics (maple, willow, cedar, larch, kapok, papaya, macademia.) * Updated some ramp images.

This year the Dwarf Fortress Gladiator Tournament is being run over on the Bay 12 Forum. Come join and have fun reading about your poor gladiator and their struggles. Signups are open until July 5th, 15:00 GMT, but please sign up as soon as you can, since it can take a little while to get on the forum even if I'm monitoring it consistently.

Interesting to see a community for DF here so fast! I remember when I 1st saw DF on r/gaming sidebar and got hooked after seeing all the weird stories and crazy mega projects. So for the sake of old time inspiration (and to try posting something) I want to ask what mega project people here dream about?

I'm migrating here from Reddit, and one of my favorites subs was always /r/DwarfFortress. Since that doesn't exist here yet, I'm going ahead and creating it! We'll kick off with a classic question: How long have you been playing Dwarf Fortress for? I started back in 2008, and I always come back to this wonderful game! It's been a heck of a ride watching the progress of this amazing game. It's always felt like the game I always wanted to play. How about you?
