Massachusetts and Connecticut are the first two states in the US to ban the use of toxic PFAS “forever chemicals” in protective gear worn by firefighters. Turnout gear, including jackets, pants, boots, gloves and other protective equipment that firefighters wear is treated heavily with PFAS that makes it resistant to water and heat, and helps the textiles breathe. But the protection comes at a steep cost: the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) estimates cancer from turnout gear accounted for 66% of firefighter deaths from 2002 to 2019. ...

[archive.vn link](https://archive.vn/cuIUp) In a race that attracted statewide attention, Jacobson's victory comes a day after a Figueroa aide was condemned for calling him "an Israeli lawyer", and the same day the DCC unearthed a video of Figueroa saying that "We cannot permit a person who is of Jewish origin, of Jewish origin, to represent our community". A close ally of Figueroa, David Michel, [also lost his primary yesterday](https://www.stamfordadvocate.com/news/article/unofficial-results-stamford-s-collins-main-beats-19655281.php).

Magnitude 4.8 and 4.0 in NJ today. Looks to be near a record for size and proximity to CT based on usgs.gov. Only thing I could find bigger/closer was dated from 1884.

I love live music, from the local band on the town green to stadium shows at Fenway/Foxboro. So if you have a show you're excited about or a favorite place to go see music, post them up.

Mike Allen, formerly of I-95, has had a podcast for the last few years. It has a lot of neat facts and stories about our beautiful state. I really find it worth a listen. Check it out!

goshenfair.org

The Goshen Fair is always on Labor Day weekend. One of the areas largest Ag fairs it's worth checking out. Fair food galore, animals, deadly carny rides (I kid, or do I ?) and lots of stuff to see and do. It runs 8-6 today.

Hello all you Nutmeggers! One of my favorite times of year is rapidly approaching, Ag Fair time! With various animal displays, old farming equipment and vastly delicious but unhealthy food there is something for everyone. https://www.ctagfairs.org/events/filters/iso=1 Has a list of upcoming fairs in calendar order, try and check a few out. I like the Bridgewater fair as it tends to be a little quieter than Goshen and Bethlehem. Come support your small town fair!

So, I just got my tax bill yesterday. It is just for my car as I don't own anything else. It isn't outrageous but I can't imagine what it must be like for other people in the state. Whatever happened to the push to eliminate car taxes?

In hopes of growing content, I'm making a post that we can all post links to our local news. Hopefully there's no paywall on them so let's do what we can. [Voices](https://www.primepublishers.com/voicesnews/)-covers a large area around Southbury/Woodbury/Roxbury local news and events, it's delivered free every Wednesday. [Bargain News](https://www.bargainnews.com/m/) the original place to buy or sell. [CT Mirror](https://ctmirror.org/)

I ran a very small hiking sub over on Reddit, I don't feel the community here is big enough yet for a new instance so we'll just keep building CT up. The DEEP has a pretty decent website that includes a list of all the state parks and forests with pdf trail maps. https://portal.ct.gov/DEEP/State-Parks/Trail-and-Camping-Maps---CT-State-Parks-and-Forests They also run a family friendly event every year called the Sky's The Limit Challenge where over the season you go and hike various state park and forest trails. Take a few pictures at key spots and send them in. Complete 10 of the 15 hikes and you earn a hiking medallion for your hiking stick. Complete all 15 and you're in a drawing for 1 of 50 hiking sticks. We have a beautiful state and you'll be amazed at what is available close by. Go check it out! https://portal.ct.gov/DEEP/State-Parks/Skys-the-Limit-2023

I'm not doing this on the regular, but together we can come up with some ideas. https://www.ctvisit.com/this-weekend https://www.eventbrite.com/d/united-states--connecticut/events--this-weekend/ I'm not associated with any organization, if you have more stuff, post it in a reply. Personally I'm going to a concert in RI on Friday.
