I tried to have him sit apart from the men, based on how he felt separated from the enlisted men. Also no, he didn't write it the trenches, just some artistic liberty. Edit, updated with the marker version

Got sick. Kicked my butt. Catching up. 
Used this as reference : https://i.pinimg.com/originals/9a/08/42/9a08423a1051f0b40b5f008e655ecd51.jpg The dices are mangled, and the perspective of the white one is flipped from that of the book. I knew something felt wrong but could'nt put my finger on it while drawing.
