[The Athletic] Ajax appoint Maurice Steijn as new head coach

• Steijn, 49, joins from Sparta Rotterdam after guiding them to a sixth-place finish in Eredivisie last season.

• He replaces John Heitinga who leaves the club after six months in charge.

• Heitinga replaced Erik ten Hag’s successor Alfred Schreuder in January but departs after only finishing third behind rivals PSV and champions Feyenoord.
