lmao Marshall's batteries was at Canterbury Rd there at Cooks River for years, and there were heaps of industrial places along the river.

I remember seeing trucks coming down to collect all the dead fish that were stinking the place out. Who knows what caused that.

The "Sugarworks" sounds so tame and nice. But it was sugarmills originally and they closed in 1854. What was it since then? It was used as a butter factory by Foley Bros and from 1900 until 1908 by Denham Bros as the Canterbury Bacon Factory. Huttons owned it from 1908-1982. It was a slaughterhouse up until 1950, then used for producing smallgoods. I suppose "Old Sugarmill" sounds a lot better than "Old Slaughterhouse" for apartments. (Interestingly, wikipedia and it's source is incorrect on Huttons. I suspect a transposition error of 1980 instead of 1908)

Pollution of the river has been going on for a lot longer than that.

There's shit in that river bed that is a lot worse than shit. And you could never get it out of the river bed.

Do NOT swim in it, and do NOT fish in it.

It can work until they capture the regulator, and then become as one.

Something I stumbled upon the other day that caught my eye. Retrofitting removable double glazing!

"Up to 40% of a home's heating energy" can be lost through windows.

This youtube vid outlines how to do it. You could probably find the bits and pieces at Bunnings, ebay etc. I guess shipping costs for a big piece of clear acrylic would probably start to get expensive, but maybe it can be ordered somewhere, and pick up yourself.

The other temporary one, which is even simpler though not as elegant is bubble wrap. Basically, you can just spray water on your window and the bubble wrap will stick! The downside on is you don't have a view out your window, and if you want to open a window, you need to pull it down, then reapply it again when you close the window.

The best thing about these it that they might be useful for anyone renting. Also if you're in units etc where you can't get fully double glazed windows because the body corporate won't allow anything different. You could still apply this on the inside cheaply and easily with most of the same benefits of getting fully double glazed windows installed.

I was having a look through one of their daily threads, and there was a bunch of active /r/melbourne people that were basically saying they had migrated to lemmy. They were contacting each other on reddit (PM I guess) and then just joining up.

Mass migration lol. So they 3 times more subscribers and seems like these were the core of /r/melbourne.

Well spotted. I was trying to work out what to add for SA, and then I wondered "What's more ignored than saying somebody is forgotten?". So I left SA out XD

No offence to SAers -or the various other states above- it's just a jab at how the various governments treat us.

For real! And get some proper insulation - both weather/temperature and noise.

It's easy to live in denser housing when you don't alternately bake or freeze, and you can't hear every neighbour in all 6 directions.

NSW will give their share straight to property developers.

Vic will give their share as a negative gearing special rebate.

Qld will give their share as a first home buyers deposit. It will instantly raise the prices of all real estate by that same amount, ensuring that you can never be a first home buyer.

Tassie will probably spend theirs on a footy stadium, with a granny flat in the carpark to make sure it qualifies

ACT gets 1.5 billion of this to go to housing on submarines.

For some reason, WA won't get anything.

    And NT is forgotten altogether.

Copying a post I did earlier in the week:

That 4 corners report was a bit of an eye opener.

I hadn't realised that eg, Football Australia had signed contracts with sports betting related companies, and that they actually get a cut of each bet. And "The NRL earnt 50 million dollars last year from this agreement. It takes a 1-point-2 per cent commission from every bet in Australia on its games, more for riskier bets and gambling on big games like the State of Origin and finals. On some bets … the NRL can take 17.5 per cent of a bookmaker's profit."

They won't want to do anything to reduce gambling. They are incentivised to increase gambling !!

This has nothing to do with good management, or ownership or anything.

His team got extremely lucky drafting Jokic with the 41st pick in 2014.

Without Jokic, they do not win this championship.

  • Noob here. Sorry in advance :/ Via [lemmy community browser](https://browse.feddit.de) I managed to work out I want to subscribe to https://lemmy.world/c/nba. And I think I did that correctly. It was added to my profile. When I follow that subscription in my profile, it takes me to https://aussie.zone/c/nba@lemmy.world This shows me some of the topics, but all the threads show 0 comments, vs the 100s of comments in https://lemmy.world/c/nba I assumed federation meant that I could could subscribe, view discussions, and comment on aussie.zone server to another server's communites. How would I see all the topics, comments and be able to comment on the NBA community above?
