Either a local SMTP server (less used) or an external service (more common). The SMTP is configurable but I believe most used option is ssl smtp over port 587.

I mean so is control d a set and forget. Even more so because they manage any changes and workarounds the companies come up with. Its basically designed for this. Having tried both options its my preferred option.

Set your country to Albania, Moldova, or Myanmar and you wont get ads on youtube.

Yes I do use opnsense and it was more annoying than control d. I tried both options.

One way I have reduced my subscriptions is by using control d. I know vpns are popular on lemmy but I found it an annoying to have to have a vpn for each device I wanted to bypass a country lock. Moreover it was annoyyng for some devices like apple tv that does not support a vpn. Establishing a vpn on the firewall broke other services that I needed to work locally in my country.
Control d on the other hand is a dns proxy tunnel so you just alter the dns on the devices you want to use it, and in their control panel you can have different countries per service - so if you browse youtube that can go via a country that does not allow ads. Bbc iplayer can be told to go via uk and so on. This is a lot more convenient and allows you to retain your country for all services except the ones you want to tunnel.

Only issue is I have had my phone stolen once and dropped into a drain once by a drunk friend. So for me backup of photos is critical (with apple I have never lost photos even after this happened). My photo library is currently 205GB and the other phones in my family are 249gb of data.
So I have the 2tb icloud plan and the apple one plan so it is all shared (currently using 463gb/2.2TB) among my family. 4 people use these 2 subscriptions.
How am I supposed to get a service that auto backs up my photos daily for me, and for 3 other phones unless I use apples offering?
Genuine question. I have not been able to answer this question for over 3 years now. Other services I tried like amazon photo backup expected me to open the app to make photo backups. Makes the service pointless imho.

Upgraded to 0.18.4 when it was released as no major changes.
Cloudflare proxy is now running with Full (Strict) encryption and speed improvements along with the ddos protection. Apologies if you couldnt access the site for about 30 minutes while it got configured.
After upgrading to 0.18.3 email is not functioning. Temporarily I have had to turn this off, but if you lose oyur password it will not be possible to gain access until the bug is resolved. I have logged a bug on github, hopefully a solution can be found quickly. P
Will be working on the site later to improve the backup and there will be some downtime later for an hour or so while I work on it. P
If you need to find the most popular community across all servers in the fediverse use this link : https://browse.feddit.de/ For example if you searched ‘new york’ you would be able using that page to find the one with the most users or engagement rather than joining a less popular community. If anyone needs help just ask below :)

Was a security release. Update took a 1-2 minutes. All fine.
Updated to 0.18.2-rc.2 to fix an XSS vulnerability found. Sorry for all the updates today. Just how it goes. - P
Have move pictrs to object storage so entire deployment now consists of: 1x VPS 1x Object storage location for images. Tnx all.
Hi I have an instance but still very underutilized. If anyone is feeling lawful-good please can you try using my instance for a while to increase the load? Will eventually help lemmy.world as if more users used this instance then they would benefit from lower load on their server. Appreciate in advance.
Upgraded to 0.18.2 and RC1 for the UI due to the recent issues. Site was down for about 30 minutes during the update.
Due to the vulnerability in Lemmy being found I will be forced to upgrade today. Unsure exactly when and I am/will be making backups when I am able to plan out how to do the update. Apologies if the site is down when you need to use it. Will also be making new registrations harder while this is ongoing.
In a few days I will have to take the site down for a few hours. Will post when that will be as I know. Reason will be to take a backup and copy down all the site over the internet so that I can ensure the upgrade doesn’t mean I cant rollback if needed.
Will upgrade soon after planning and checking how others handle the upgrade. Will be in a few days time.
Hi all, Did some speed improvements to memory and CPU to try ensure that the instance remains fast as it gets bigger. As with all "improvements" sometimes the opposite outcome occurs so while it should be more optimized, let me know if it is not. CPU is currently hovering around 5% usage and memory is at about 20% so as far as I can tell nothing is under pressure. Traffic in and out is about 300KiB/s but I will continue to monitor. Database is only 1.6GB and Pictrs (thumbnails?) is 3.2GB so things are still small.
My main account I want to use is at the bottom so I always have to switch to it. Is it possible to move it to the top?
