Whatcha all been playing? I've been pushing myself through silent hill 2 remake. Not because it's bad but because it's so damn scary to me 😭. I live for horror games but this game fills me with so much dread nearly every second. I have a few nitpicks with decisions they made, but now that I'm on the final area I think they really did do as good a job as you can with this remake. It's really damn solid

That's true, and fair. I am optimistic though since from what I understand Arkane didn't want to develop a multiplayer game. Sounds like this has been something remedy wanted to do

Tbh every time this project was mentioned I assumed it was a PVP thing. I'm WAY more interested knowing it's a co-op thing!

Yeah I'm realizing I didn't word that super well. Yes sync is a thing and they know that, but they don't want to have to use Firefox on mobile because they think it's slow

That's super fair and I agree for the most part. Though it's hard to be super enthusiastic about it when they focus on a plethora of super limited edition color ways for the pocket instead of keeping the base one in stock and completely abandoning DAC support which they promised a while ago (and recently scrubbed all mention of on their site)

Yes that would actually be very helpful! I've had trouble doing that on the android version, and I have heard that can help show what exactly is causing the issue. I have heard some settings on ublock can cause this (which I have tried tinkering with)

I think they know about the cross device syncing but yeah think it's too slow. Idk how long it's been since they used it.

There is an issue I've had with Firefox on Android that I've tried to fix but haven't been able to, where the first time I load a website in like... An hour or 2, it takes a long time to load. After that everything is pretty quick but the first load after the app has been suspended (is my guess) is slow

The problem is they apparently really value having cross device syncing between desktop and phone, and dislike Firefox on mobile a bit due to speed. Idk I mean yeah I think chromium browsers on android are technically faster (seems to me at least) but with no ads it's way better

I have a love hate with analogue. They undoubtedly make really excellent products, and I absolutely adore my pocket. However they really lean into the fomo of their stuff. They make very few units, and you have to be ready to go when they drop more product most of the time. I will say though the price of this is a lot lower than I expected. And while you shouldn't count on it, every analogue system has gotten some form of ability to play roms from other systems (whether it's built into the OS (not happening for the 3D) or a "jailbreak" is released by basically an employee of analogue).

Analogue stuff is good if you have cartridges you want to play, but at this point, with the recent release of Taki Udon's cheap Mister Pi (https://retroremake.co/pages/store), I think Mister is the way to go. It's an open source project as opposed to analogue's implementation. The issue with Mister was you needed a pretty expensive DE10 Nano board to utilize it. Now you can get one of these new boards for only $100 (if you can get your hands on them. Only 2 batches have been sold so far and they sell out quick). Plus Taki is planning on using this new board to make a handheld Mister which I'm super stoked for.

Earthbound / mother 2 is also 5 stars for me and can definitely be played before hand. There is overlap in the antagonist and references but otherwise mother 3 takes place an incomprehensible amount of time in the future. I didn't include earthbound since its a tiny bit more backtracky and explory but tbh it's about as linear as m&l superstar saga so I'd def recommend it if you want to play!

  • Recommend me your favorite linear games!
  • chloyster chloyster 6d ago 100%

I suppose I have to ask how linear. Like can it be mostly linear while having the chance to explore off the beaten path very briefly? Or like straight up hallway simulator.

Ive been using a site actually to rate games I've played so I'll start listing some of my 5 and 4.5 star games that I would personally consider linear.

    5 star games

    • Astrobot
    • Silent hill 2 (enhanced edition mod for PC, remake I'm still working through but it's good)
    • Rayman origins
    • Mario and Luigi superstar saga (borderline linear)
    • Kingdom hearts 2 (you can pick the order of worlds at times and have the option to backtrack but not necessary
    • Mother 3
    • Re4 (og and remake both 10/10 to me)

    4.5 star games

    • Chants of sennaar
    • Kirby super Star ultra
    • Halo 2
    • Rayman legends
    • WolfenStein the new order
    • Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney
    • Dead Space
    • The last of us
    • the last of us 2 (has one shortish open area section)
    • Alan wake 2 (has some open exploration areas at points)
    • Celeste
    • The case of the golden idol

I could go on, and some are borderline linear, but these are my faves that mostly involve going from one moment to the next

Edit: the site I've been using. Feel free to check out my list of played games ordered by rating if you want more. I have a lot on there: https://backloggd.com/u/chloyster/games/user-rating/type:played?page=1

I'm super happy with it so far, though I am not quite as far. I got up to Woodside apartments last night before going to bed.

Totally agree on the ambiance. They absolutely match the original and Akira Yamaoka did an amazing job in this department yet again. Also agree on the dialogue, really happy with it so far. I was worried due to how much I disliked the hd collections redone vocals but they did a good job here.

So far haven't had much in the department of graphical glitches, though I did notice my frame rate tanked when I got to the apartments at the end of my session so I made need to tweak some settings.

Combat hasn't bothered me but also I'm playing on standard and haven't gotten the pistol yet so my thoughts are developing. Melee is quite satisfying in this game though imo

Agree on the steam achievements haha.

While I'm still early it does seem like they've grabbed the vibes straight from the original and dropped them into a modern coat of paint. And at the end of the day sh2 thrives on its vibes, so I'm very happy. Excited to keep playing

  • Supreme Court declines Biden administration appeal in Texas emergency abortion case
  • chloyster chloyster 2w ago 100%

In the past you have stated that the Democrats had control of Congress and the presidency under Biden and Obama, yet they were unable to do things like get a public option in the ACA or codify roe v Wade. However this continues to be a misunderstanding of the situation.

    https://19thnews.org/2022/01/congress-codify-abortion-roe/

While I can agree I am disappointed in the inability to get these things done, and Obama saying it was no longer a priority, I don't see how you can pin this all on the Democrats as some kind of monolithic entity.

The fact of the matter is during Obama's terms, there were anti abortion Democrats. These Democrats were enough to keep abortion access out of the ACA and prevent roe being codified.

Fast forward to Bidens terms, and we now have a filibuster rule that requires 60 senators in order to pass stuff in the Senate. There were not 60 senators who supported roe codification when the Democrats "controlled" the Senate.

People who support abortion access are going to vote for Democrats because as time has gone on, the Democratic party has rallied around abortion rights, while Republicans have rallied against it. Opinions changed, and the Democrats are now the party of abortion access. Blaming the current state of things on a monolithic democratic party is in my opinion a bad faith warping of the situation

Whatcha all playing? I've got a few on my list this week. Ufo 50 continues to be one of my favorite purchases in a long time. It's the best collection of games since the orange box imo. The new Zelda has also been stellar. The frame rate issues are certainly unfortunate, and it may be worth it for some to wait on a more powerful switch 2 to play this title, but I highly recommend checking it out at some point. The game is really creative and the Hyrule you get to explore is super fun imo. I want to get back to the plucky squire, but these games have kept me busy unfortunately

Unfortunately, the 3D sections are nowhere as interesting as the 2D elements, and often fail at using the best qualities of the mechanics to really stand out. All that said, when The Plucky Squire is leaning on its best ideas, it’s a truly engaging and creative title that should be experienced. ------------- **[But Why Tho?](https://opencritic.com/outlet/722/but-why-tho-)** - [8 / 10](https://butwhytho.net/2024/09/the-plucky-squire-pc-review/) >The whole third act will especially leave you smiling like a fool, because at its core, The Plucky Squire is good, simple fun. ------------- **[Checkpoint Gaming](https://opencritic.com/outlet/563/checkpoint-gaming)** - [8 / 10](https://checkpointgaming.net/reviews/2024/09/the-plucky-squire-review-from-the-pages-to-your-heart/) >The Plucky Squire may be one of the most exceptionally presented video games in recent memory. In moving from the 2D space to the 3D space, a sense of wonder is created that's unrivalled by the vast majority of other releases. That sense of wonderment is captured in the storytelling as well, which leans on the charm of children's fiction. Perhaps a little too scared to create complex depth to the puzzles or gameplay, more mature audiences may find the game lacking in some regard. However, that doesn't stop the title from being widely appealing and an absolute delight from prologue to epilogue. ------------- **[Console Creatures](https://opencritic.com/outlet/798/console-creatures)** - [Recommended](https://www.consolecreatures.com/review-the-plucky-squire/) >The Plucky Squire is one of my favourite games this year. It's filled with charm, humour, and heart. All Possible Futures understands video games don't need to be complicated and bloated—the emphasis on puzzles, platforming, and combat is straightforward but done incredibly well. ------------- **[Digitec Magazine](https://opencritic.com/outlet/887/digitec-magazine)** - *German* - [5 / 5 ](https://www.digitec.ch/de/page/34764) >“The Plucky Squire” is a masterpiece that enchanted me with its creativity and charm. It stands aside Balatro and Animal Well as one of the best indie games of the year. ------------- **[GamingTrend](https://opencritic.com/outlet/102/gamingtrend)** - [90 / 100](https://gamingtrend.com/feature/reviews/the-plucky-squire-review-the-pen-and-the-sword/) >The Plucky Squire is an adorable adventure for everyone to enjoy. It has some issues, like glitches and a less than stellar story, but plucky really is the right word to describe the game. It's technically ambitious and impressively varied, making it easy to forgive its shortcomings. ------------- **[Kakuchopurei](https://opencritic.com/outlet/788/kakuchopurei)** - [90 / 100](https://www.kakuchopurei.com/2024/09/the-plucky-squire-review-kkp/) >The Plucky Squire may not be the most challenging game you'll play. It is, however, the most charming, most beautiful, and most engrossing of these 2D action-adventure titles you'll have the pleasure of experiencing. ------------- **[LevelUp](https://opencritic.com/outlet/454/levelup)** - *Spanish* - [9.3 / 10](https://www.levelup.com/PlayStation-5/juegos/803350/The-Plucky-Squire/review) >The Plucky Squire was worth the wait; it's the definition of indie perfection: it has a lot of quality, heart, soul, innovation and charm. Thanks to the characters, their personality, the world and all the creative things it does constantly, it has become one of our games of the year and one that we will remember with a lot of love. ------------- **[Marooners' Rock](https://opencritic.com/outlet/341/marooners-rock)** - [8 / 10](https://maroonersrock.com/the-plucky-squire-review/) >The Plucky Squire is an incredibly inventive and unique amalgamation of 2D and 3D gameplay. Its charming little story is played out with a comedic tone and sarcastic humor that is a welcomed accompaniment to the incredibly fun-to-play gameplay. There were times it felt like Earthbound and others Zelda; however, The Plucky Squire was able to form an identity of its own through its glowing personality. While a tad on the easy side, The Plucky Squire is an artful and entertaining story worth exploring. ------------- **[MonsterVine](https://opencritic.com/outlet/334/monstervine)** - [4 / 5](https://monstervine.com/2024/09/the-plucky-squire-review/) >The Plucky Squire is a fun & fresh take on a classic game style, full of heart with a great message for all ages. Just because a story seems simple, doesn't mean it doesn't matter. ------------- **[Niche Gamer](https://opencritic.com/outlet/298/niche-gamer)** - [9 / 10](https://nichegamer.com/reviews/the-plucky-squire-review/) >Quote not yet available ------------- **[One More Game](https://opencritic.com/outlet/811/one-more-game)** - [9 / 10](https://onemoregame.ph/2024/09/the-plucky-squire-review/) >The Plucky Squire is a creative triumph and certainly lives up to the hype ever since it was first announced. The full experience is wonderful, often employing a change of mechanics from one level to the next, keeping players on their toes with fresh gameplay. > >The Plucky Squire deserves a spot on anyone's list of titles to look forward to this year. It is a refreshing game amidst the barrage of AAA titles, and certainly a reminder that falling back to depend on a creatively fun and polished experience can do no wrong. ------------- **[PSX Brasil](https://opencritic.com/outlet/514/psx-brasil)** - *Portuguese* - [85 / 100](https://psxbrasil.com.br/analise/the-plucky-squire-review/) >Quote not yet available ------------- **[Press Start](https://opencritic.com/outlet/491/press-start)** - [9 / 10](https://press-start.com.au/reviews/ps5-reviews/2024/09/18/the-plucky-squire-review-a-book-worth-checking-out/) >The Plucky Squire is absolute magic, and a page-turner, from beginning to end. From its first, boisterously narrated word, the game packages so much heart and character within a rather novel, wildly creative notion. It takes what Pixar did for toys and applies it to storybooks. ------------- **[Prima Games](https://opencritic.com/outlet/817/prima-games)** - [8 / 10](https://primagames.com/reviews/the-plucky-squire-review) >The Plucky Squire is an endlessly charming adventure that tells a wholesome story thanks to its likable cast and lighthearted tone. Jumping from 2D to 3D spaces is technically impressive, no matter how often you've seen the effect play out. ------------- **[Push Square](https://opencritic.com/outlet/25/push-square)** - [8 / 10](https://www.pushsquare.com/reviews/ps5/the-plucky-squire) >The Plucky Squire is a delightful adventure that surprises with fun ideas in every chapter. The world within the book offers unique puzzles and challenges, which is compounded by Jot's ability to leap from its pages into the third dimension. Though the combat's kinda flat, and some elements deserve to be used more often than they are, there's an undeniable joy to the game's constant imaginative ideas. It's a short but sweet game that'll win over players of all ages. ------------- **[Rock, Paper, Shotgun](https://opencritic.com/outlet/270/rock-paper-shotgun)** - [Unscored](https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/the-plucky-squire-review) >An altogether fun action adventure with some charming, and occasionally brilliant, 2D to 3D platforming and puzzling. But don't expect to flex your own creativity, even if it gives you the tools to do so. ------------- **[Stevivor](https://opencritic.com/outlet/424/stevivor)** - [7.5 / 10](https://stevivor.com/reviews/the-plucky-squire-review/) >While both Astro Bot and The Plucky Squire are about creativity and joy, the latter manages to get in its own way in comparison. The result is jarring. ------------- **[TechRaptor](https://opencritic.com/outlet/329/techraptor)** - [8.5 / 10](https://techraptor.net/gaming/reviews/plucky-squire-review-real-page-turner) >The Plucky Squire is an incredible action-adventure game combining 2D and 3D, but needs just a little more shine. ------------- **[Tom's Hardware Italia](https://opencritic.com/outlet/861/toms-hardware-italia)** - *Italian* - [9 / 10](https://www.tomshw.it/videogioco/the-plucky-squire-recensione) >All Possible Futures, in their first challenge, deliver a meticulously crafted work of art that surprises with several unexpected twists, sure to leave you smiling more than once. If you're in the mood for a light-hearted story, suitable for everyone, with highly original level design, then The Plucky Squire is the game for you: a simple adventure capable of warming your heart. ------------- **[WayTooManyGames](https://opencritic.com/outlet/742/waytoomanygames)** - [8 / 10](https://waytoomany.games/2024/09/17/review-the-plucky-squire/) >I absolutely adored The Plucky Squire. It takes the simplicity of older 2D games and mixes it with the fun exploration found in more modern 3D puzzle platformers. My only complaint is that I found the puzzles to be a bit too devoid of challenge, as I would have loved to have seen more done with the page-turning, book-shifting concepts they introduced. Still, this is a game that is truly something unique and can be enjoyed by everyone, especially with all the accessibility options available. ------------- **[WellPlayed](https://opencritic.com/outlet/382/wellplayed)** - [9.5 / 10](https://www.well-played.com.au/the-plucky-squire-review/) >A wickedly creative romp through a basic storybook tale of good versus evil that ends up being anything but basic, The tale of Jot and his merry band of mates is one that you will easily enjoy - remembered long after that final page has been turned. ------------- **[XboxEra](https://opencritic.com/outlet/758/xboxera)** - [7.5 / 10](https://xboxera.com/2024/09/17/the-plucky-squire-review/) >The Plucky Squire is a game clearly made with a serious amount of love for the wonderful medium of glorious interactivity that is video games. And for it being the first title from development team All Possible Futures, it’s a staggering achievement in art, design and ideas. It’s just a shame the gameplay didn’t get as much attention as the nostalgia it so skilfully indulges. ------------- **[ZdobywcyGier.eu](https://opencritic.com/outlet/869/zdobywcygier-eu)** - *Polish* - [10 / 10](https://zdobywcygier.eu/wp/2024/09/17/the-plucky-squire-recenzja/) >The Plucky Squire is one of the best games of this year. The highly varied gameplay perfectly combines with a creative approach to building the game world in both 2D and 3D sequences. The above elements, combined with near-perfect technical condition and very good sound design, put this production next to the best games of the year. -------------

Whatcha playing! I 100%ed Astro Bot in just a couple days lol. But really outstanding. Up there with Rayman origins as favorite platformer. Now I'm kind of waiting for more stuff to be out. Super excited for the new Zelda and cautiously optimistic for the sh2 remake

Not a particularly interesting article necessarily, but I wanted to share this as the list is actually quite good in my opinion, and it's laid out very nicely. It's one page that's very easy to scroll through. Might find some things you havent played!
