    There, I fixed the headline.

Okay, enough is enough. The Internet Archive is both essential infrastructure and irreplaceable historical record; it cannot be allowed to fall. Rather than just hoping the Archive can defend itself, I say It's time to hunt down and counterattack the scum perpetrating this!

You realize they have the same policy for everybody from checkout clerks to corporate software developers, right? Even in positions that never get anywhere near any sort of dangerous equipment.

Hell, even pure software companies, that don't have any employees where the issues you cite would legitimately apply, sometimes have the same bullshit allegedly-insurance-mandated drug testing.

Point is, a lot of this shit is driven by busybodies inventing excuses for their puritan moral crusade, not genuine risk.

(Full disclosure: (a) I have firsthand experience working as a software engineer at places that do drug testing, including Home Depot specifically, and (b) I don't actually use drugs, so this pisses me off purely as a matter of principle.)

Ironically, a Toyota. Specifically, my 1994 4Runner (that's from back when they were still the same as the famous indestructible Hilux, BTW). I've owned it since just before the pandemic and still haven't managed to get it to run right yet. It's been parked for months because I can't find any mechanic willing to touch it.

The lesson here is that when people say the 3VZE is the one bad engine Toyota made, believe them. The most common advice I've read for fixing it is "rip it out and swap in a 5VZE," which I'm seriously considering.

Like it or not, the US presidential election has potentially dire worldwide consequences for global warming. If you think our attention is best spent on global warming -- and I would agree -- then paying attention to the election is that.

I feel like the Democrats ought to be pivoting towards attacking Vance at this point. The possibility of Trump kicking the bucket from natural causes and the GOP getting a sympathy (/conspiracy-theorist) bounce in the votes this late would be devastating, so they ought to be pulling out all the stops to anticipate and mitigate that before it happens.

It all has to start somewhere…

That "somewhere" ought to be complaining to the FTC etc., because boycotts are hardly ever effective. We've put the mythical "free market" on such a pedestal these days that it seems like a lot of us forget that consumer protection regulation is even an option!

The increase in average lifespan in the modern era has come almost entirely from a reduction of people dying during child birth and childhood. The life expectancy for people who've already reached adulthood (and for women, who've stopped having children) hasn't really changed much since prehistory. Maybe we are "on the cusp" of that changing, but it hasn't actually done so yet.
