Last I checked (which was a while ago) "AI" still can't pass the most basic of tasks such as "show me a blank image"/"show me a pure white image". the LLM will output the most intense fever dream possible but never a simple rectangle filled with #fff coded pixels. I'm willing to debate the potentials of AI again once they manage to do that without those "benchmarks" getting special attention in the training data.

  • Proton is the Future of PC gaming. But how does it work? [Gardiner Bryant, YouTube]
  • neshura neshura 2w ago 100%

in my experience that usually boils down to the Linux version getting (an understandably) low priority compared to the windows version. Which is something that won't change until Linux has a significant market share and I can't fault the devs for it. For an example of a game where that is not the case I'd like to take Factorio, where the devs went out of their way to properly work on the Linux native version and even include Linux/Mac exclusive features for their next update. But that only happened because one of the devs themselves uses Linux.

You apparently have little interaction with regular users because one of the top problems a non-power user has is "oops I accidentally hit delete on this important file I don't have a backup of".

Not saying qbittorrent-nox of all things switching makes a ton of sense but at least for desktop applications there is a very good reason why deleting things becomes a two step process.

    A) funny how that works with Steam everytime. "We don't need Steam" > sales plummet > "Release on Steam in 60 days"

    B) I don't think releasing the game on Steam will save them here, from what I've seen it's just a bad game plain and simple. It will maybe fill the gap a bit but probably not by enough to actually achieve the sales numbers they would like to see.

I somewhat disagree that you have to be a data hoarder for 10G to be worth it. For example I've got a headless steam client on my server that has my larger games installed (all in all ~2TB so not in data hoarder territories) which allows me to install and update those games at ~8 Gbit/s. Which in turn allows me to run a leaner Desktop PC since I can just uninstall the larger games as soon as I don't play them daily anymore and saves me time when Steam inevitably fails to auto update a game on my Desktop before I want to play it.

Arguably a niche use case but it exists along side other such niche use cases. So if someone comes into this community and asks about how best to implement 10G networking I will assume they (at least think) have such a use case on their hands and want to improve that situation a bit.

I'm starting to wonder whether the Editor kicked the Author in the butt to finally get the plot going, not that I'm complaining about it. I'd normally agree with @wjs018@ani.social's assessment that they'll get cheap rent from Ooya-san but I suspect she'll die from high blood sugar levels when she hears about this (I know I almost did)

Personally going 10G on my networking stuff has significantly improved my experience with self-hosting, especially when it comes to file transfers. 1G can just be extremely slow when you're dealing with large amounts of data so I also don't really understand why people recommend against 10G here of all places.

Yeah they definitely could have been quicker with the patches but as long as the patches come out before the articles they are above average with how they handle CVE's, way too many companies out there just not giving a shit whatsoever.

If I buy a switch and that thing decides to give me downtime in order to auto update I can tell you what lands on my blacklist. Auto-Updates absoultely increase security but there are certain use cases where they are more of a hindrance than a feature, want proof? Not even Cisco does Auto-Update by default (from what I've managed to find in this short time neither does TrendNet which you've been speaking well of). The device on its own deciding to just fuck off and pull down your network is not in any way a feature their customers would want. If you don't want the (slight) maintenance load that comes with an active switch do not get one, get a passive one instead.

  • I've let the survey run for long enough now I suppose (at least I'm not getting any new responses) so I'm making this post with the "results". If anyone is interested in the raw data I'll post it but for now I'll just focus on the conclusion I've drawn from it. For the most part responses only varied slightly but most of the questions were only there to help make a decision about the core question: What do you want to happen with this instance now?. The responses to which varied a lot compared to the other questions. There were some votes against opening up the instance to other series discussions but I myself and the majority of votes are in favor so that's what will happen. However I really dislike seeing empty discussion threads so there will be some rules in place so this doesn't end up like a spam machine. As is with all things in life these are subject to change. **#1:** There must be at least 3 users interested in regular discussions for a series to create a community for it here. There should be some regular volume of discussion for the series and 3 core users should facilitate that. *Note: If there already are discussion or fan art posts for a series on the Fediverse feel free to provide some of them to show that the newly created community would not just rot in a corner.* **#2:** If the series does not have weekly chapters there should be some form of plan for how to structure this so there is regular activity. There is little sense in using a community only for volume discussions and nothing else those could just as well take place in !lightnovels@ani.social. As such there should at least be some discussion in between volumes (discussions about characters, fan art, whatever really) *Note: If the series does not release on J-Novel Club please be aware that [@Mestionora@bookwormstory.social](https://bookwormstory.social/u/Mestionora) will be unable to automatically create posts for it. In those cases threads need to be manually created every week.* If anyone is interested in a series and thinks they can meet these 2 rules please message me either here or via Matrix (@neshura:neshweb.chat) so we can discuss the details. Additionally I'll post a list of links to any volume or chapter/part discussion threads to the weekly thread over at !lightnovels@ani.social. It's something I should have done with the PrePub discussions for Ascendance of a Bookworm as well but I didn't think of it until now.

Check the modlog for proof, a discussion post about moving this instance to an instance that shan't be named now got removed for "linking to instance featuring pedo content". Ironically that exact possibility was reason for the discussion in the first place so seeing it happen this quickly is a bit funny. Not sure how best to go about linking to said instance since it seems to get your content removed. DM's would be the only solution I guess but not sure if those are checked as well.

The initial hiccups with Federation seem to be resolved with 0.19.1-rc.1. Since I also managed to test the new Version of the Mestionora Bot (it should now actually post Part 2 and Part 3 Manga discussions in parallel instead of only Part 3, hooray) I will update the instance after PrePub discussions die down a bit. **Expected Timeframe is Wednesday 16:00 UTC - Wednesday 18:00 UTC.** During the Update changes to the expected downtime can be checked on [status.bookwormstory.social](https://status.bookwormstory.social). Last night the instance lemmy.world suffered a JavaScript injection attack. The attack set out to steal login cookies of users upon visiting infected threads, primarily targeting admins. **Potentially Affected Data** - E-Mail address stolen and/or changed (if provided in user settings) - Password changed **Mitigations** Malicious comments have been replaced by a removal message. I have deployed the UI hotfix and [@ludrol@bookwormstory.social](https://bookwormstory.social/u/ludrol) has deleted all Custom Emoji until it is clear whether those are safe to use. Additionally all login sessions have been invalidated as a safety precaution as well, any cookies that were stolen are now rendered useless. **Conclusion** So far it does not seem like this instance was affected. **If you are not using bookwormstory.social and your instance is not on UI Version 0.18.2-rc.1 please be aware that you are likely still at risk of the attack, please check for any announcements of your instance administrators.** [Details of the vulnerability are here](https://lemmy.world/post/1293336)

I have decided to block Meta's Fediverse platform threads.net. The three reasons pushing me to do so are: - Meta's known history of the Embrace-Extend-Extinguush playbook (XMPP) - Meta's disturbing data collection practices when it comes to threads. - I don't trust Meta to keep their platform properly moderated. Especially since large parts of the fediverse already defederated, reducing the number of independent moderators checking over their content. Edit: This is preventitive, threads.net does not offer ActivityPub support currently but has announced plans to do so in the future.
