  • Starfield, is it getting review bombed?
  • oct_opus oct_opus 1y ago 67%

I don’t know why but the game is not fun, I was bored in like 2 hours… the controls were a mess and everything looks tinted and hard to see.

Add to that the poor optimisation on PC. I’m going to pass on that one

  • Young climate activist tells Greenpeace to drop ‘old-fashioned’ anti-nuclear stance
  • oct_opus oct_opus 1y ago 81%

Here are few things to consider:

    • The vast majority of nuclear waste is not highly radioactive. Over 90% of it is low-level waste. As we progresses we're finding better ways to manage and reduce this or even recycling it.
    • The Fukushima incident though unfortunate and a reminder to improve safety standards didn't result in any direct fatalities due to radiation. In fact, the amount of radioactivity released into the ocean was 0 when you look at the vastness of the Pacific and the dilution. The oceans already contain a considerable amount of natural radiation and the added amount from the incident, though not better than nothing is a drop in the ocean size bucket.
    • Air pollution from coal plants contributes to numerous premature deaths yearly with some estimates in the hundreds of thousands globally. This is far more concerning than the potential risks posed by nuclear energy especially when managed with modern safety standards. Just see Fukushima.
    • As for nuclear plants being military targets, any infrastructure can become a target in wartime, dams, chemical plants or any other energy installations. The key is to ensure safety and security measures.

  • Apple Explains Why It Won’t Make iPhones With Replaceable Batteries
  • oct_opus oct_opus 1y ago 94%

It seems they are not going to make batterie replaceable without a fight. The waterproof excuse is crap, they already don’t give us repairs if the iphone is « water dommage » and they can just make a new water resistant design around the new requirements

When there is a will there's a way. They underestimate what people on the interwebs are willing to do to watch bad videos without being bothered by even abysmally crappier ads 🤡

  • Top Extensions to Make YouTube Bearable
  • oct_opus oct_opus 1y ago 100%

I feel like there was an unwritten agreement between extension developers and Google/Youtube. Youtube allowed ad-blocking for those who wanted it, and in exchange, ad-blockers didn't hide that users were blocking ads. By doing this, Youtube would break this agreement. I think there will always be a way around it, but currently, as it's still working, no alternative that I know of has been developed.

  • Hello fellow, ~~lemmings~~, lemmur ! If you are like me, you probably spend a lot of time on YouTube, more than you want to admit. I remember the days when videos had stars instead of thumbs up or down, and when YouTube had, let's say, more mature content on it. Now the site has a lot of functionalitys that are great for Google, but that I don't need nor want. So, to improve the enjoyment of the platform, I present to you the ultimate extension survival kit for YouTube: 1. [**uBlock Origin**](https://ublockorigin.com/): (or your favorite ad-blocker) This is an absolute must-have. It's a good ad-blocker that not only blocks YouTube ads but also works across all websites. It's lightweight, efficient, and open-source. Say goodbye to ads. 2. [**SponsorBlock**](https://sponsor.ajay.app/): Skip over the sponsored segments of videos. It's a community-driven project, with users submitting the timestamps of sponsored content. You can even customize it to skip over different types of segments like intros, outros, and more. 3. [**Return YouTube Dislike**](https://www.returnyoutubedislike.com/): Since YouTube removed the dislike count, it's been harder to gauge the quality of videos. This extension brings back the dislike count. 4. [**DeArrow**](https://dearrow.ajay.app/): Extension for crowdsourcing better titles and thumbnails. It removes click-bait titles and thumbnails providing a cleaner Youtube. 5. [**YouTube Shorts Block**](https://github.com/doma-itachi/Youtube-shorts-block): If you're not a fan of shorts, this extension is for you. It plays the Youtube shorts video as if it were a normal video and hides the "shorts" tab from the left menu. [Firefox Link](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-shorts-block/) [Chrome Link](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/youtube-shorts-block/jiaopdjbehhjgokpphdfgmapkobbnmjp) 6. [**Enhancer for YouTube**](https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/enhancer-for-youtube/): Allows you to add theming options, auto-HD, keyboard shortcuts and more. These are the extensions I use. Don't hesitate to suggest more. I will edit the post accordingly. It's not lost on me that these extensions remove many things that were not initially a problem on YouTube but that either arose because of the monetary incentive of Google handling the website, Youtubers trying to make money, or as countermeasures to problems that were taken care of by a previous extension. This kind of feels like an arms race… Edit 1: Changed the YouTube Shorts Block description and added Enhancer for YouTube

    Diablo 4 vs Diablo 1
  • oct_opus oct_opus 1y ago 94%

I played Diablo 4 until the end of the campaign, but after that, it became boring. The dungeons are repetitive, with everything looking the same. The dullest thing is the level scaling. Instead of having a sense of progression and being overpowered, every mob are at the same level as you. Additionally, the only effective way to play the game is to copy someone else's build…

It doesn't feel like a game made with love and passion but more like a mathematical formula that maximizes time played over enjoyment.

That game is pretty, but that's pretty much it.

Thank you for the link. It works great! Now I have the perfect YouTube with Ublock Origin + Sponsor Block + Dearrow + Return Youtube Dislike. It's crazy how many extensions you need to add to make YouTube bearable.... it's really time for a good competitor to take its place !

  • What other less-toxic system could work instead of karma?
  • oct_opus oct_opus 1y ago 100%

Karma is like a high score that everyone is trying to achieve. It is more of an engagement metric rather than a quality or moderation one.

You can use monitoring tools on the backend to count the number of removed posts and moderation actions taken on an account that is only accessible to moderators. This information does not need to be public, but it could, like how Steam displays VAC bans.

Currently, everyone's post and comment history is public on their profile I think.

  • What other less-toxic system could work instead of karma?
  • oct_opus oct_opus 1y ago 100%

I don't think having a rating system that could be farmed or abused is a good solution. There should be no incentive to generate content just for the publicity of the account. All the content ends up being reposts of low-effort things that are just more relatable, which, in all honesty, I find really lame.

Reddit locked out r/mildlyinteresting mods who tried to mark their sub as nsfw
  • oct_opus oct_opus 1y ago 100%

On my end, r/anime_titties has the most recent post from 10 days ago. The same goes for r/mildlyinteresting, and there is a banner asking if the sub features adult content.

Reddit has become fully corrupted, and it will only get worse. Even if you don't care about third-party apps, it's only a matter of time before their greed comes for your favorite subreddit or the next feature that they can exploit for money.

Even the latest features on Reddit, like the avatar as NFT, Reddit Premium, or the new design, are just here to extract more money from us.

I will not share my data or use the website of a company that shows so little concern for what their users want.
