Unfortunately for the gunmen in this example, their guns will wear and tear. A crucial part or two will fail and not be replaceable. Then their entire strategy of "kill everyone else" will fall apart. And that's aside from the fact that human societies have always flourished because we have worked with rather than against each other.

The irony in the "prepping" movement these days is that it was never intended to be this thing about having an inexhaustible supply of resources just for you and your family (if you're still on speaking terms with them) to live off of when the nukes fall.

It's not about sitting in your attic and picking off starving people who are looking for a meal while you sit on a cache of food and ammunition.

It's supposed to be about being a useful person in your community who can help each other weather the worst in life. You will get much further in a disaster if you have skills than if you have stuff. You might have an entire Home Depot to yourself, but it's far too late to learn carpentry when the rain starts to fall.

Usually when I hear people described as "Christ-like," it's used to demote how much power and influence that person has over others - for example, "Donald Trump is a Christ-like figure among the alt-right." Someone going around and calling themselves that would come across as strange at best.

    paranoid and psychotic tendencies

If he was simply insane, then how would he have performed any of his miracles? Or are you going to throw out the parts of the Bible you don't like and keep the ones that support your position?

Also, I've dealt with, and am friends with, plenty of people with what you would call "paranoid and psychotic tendencies." That you would accuse someone who walked this earth more than 1,900 years ago of having them suggests you either have supreme medical and historical knowledge. Perhaps you've spoken with him so you can make an accurate diagnosis?

in which he claims to be God

If he is, then that explains everything he said and did in the Bible. It's pretty obvious that if he's God that he would want people to follow him.

This comes off to me as incredibly paranoid

He was talking about Judas, who was stealing money from the ministry and later sold Jesus out for a handful of silver. Calling that out isn't paranoia.

I'm apparently not the only one who thought Christ seemed mad

If he was just a madman and the people he was "curing" of "demons" were also madmen, those "cures" wouldn't have happened. No person with schizophrenia has ever been cured of this disorder simply because another person with schizophrenia touched them. I've had the disorder for about seven years at this point; I wish it were that simple.

I agree with you that following Jesus doesn't make a lot of sense unless you're worshipping him. His entire message is based on his own divinity. If he was just a prophet, then if he was a good one, he wouldn't be saying things like "I and the Father are one" (John 10:30).

The Russian Orthodox Church is basically a propaganda arm of the Russian government. The army has its own personal cathedral and Patriarch Kirill ("former" KGB asset, by the way) describes the invasion of Ukraine as a holy war.

Judge Christy Craig ruled that Ayala was incompetent and he is being sent to Lake's Crossing Center, a maximum security psychiatric facility located in Sparks.

Some people are simply too dangerous to be left in society, but unable to stand trial. That's why we have solutions like this.

We're naturally inquisitive creatures, though. That's how we got here, by asking questions that matter to us. Why should we handwave away the most important question of all time? Would you be satisfied if the answer to every important scientific and philosophical question was "It doesn't matter, don't worry about it"?

Morality is not at all self-evident. "Basic empathy" is such a vague concept that it can be turned in any number of ways. Is it more empathetic to force someone to be born against their will and persist in this world full of suffering, or to kill them before they're born so they never have to suffer? Ask a hundred people a list of everything "basic empathy" covers, and you'd get a hundred different answers. As for the religious caricatures you mention, of the hundreds of religious people I know, none of them "want to do a bunch of heinous things were it not for the idea of hell." They want to do good things, instead, out of love for the Lord who created them. Based on articles like the one above, though, people refusing to believe that morality is imposed makes them come off as wanting to do whatever they want and then retroactively rewrite their morality to make it seem like they're doing good things. Look at any 20th-century dictatorship and you'll see what I mean.

First, people doing wrong punish themselves in the act. Those acts are toxic to the soul. God barely needs to lift a finger there. Second, what would you rather have happen: people get punished for doing wrong, or not? If the first, you need free choice; if the second, then you either have slavery or no justice at all.

There is artistic freedom, but the fact remains that there are moral rights and wrongs. Simply because I can imagine something doesn't mean it's possible, you only need to look at the Penrose stairs to know this. Not even God can do logically impossible things, like making square circles.

God is the only sensible explanation of the creation of the universe and morality. Without him, nothing makes sense at all.

  • Schools shouldn't be treated as these magical places where you're put in at some age and over a decade later you emerge a complete human being. You have parents and you spend more time at home than at school for a reason: you're supposed to learn from your parents. A school can potentially give you a degree of financial literacy instruction. Your parents should be the ones paying your allowance money and driving you to the bank to get your first checking account. A school can teach you how to cook something. Your parents should be the ones eating your food and helping you cook it better. A school can show you some level of DIY. Your parents should directly benefit from teaching you how to fix the sink when it gets clogged. A school can tell you what kinds of careers exist. Your parents should love you enough to tell you that either your career ambitions or your financial expectations need to change. A school can tell you how to build a resume. Your parents should be the ones driving you to your job interview and to your job until you buy your first car. A school can give you a failing grade when you do poorly on a test. Your parents should be able to make you face the real, in-the-moment consequences of doing something wrong. Expecting a school, public or private, to teach you everything you need to know is a grave mistake. You need people in your corner who are taking an active part in raising you all the way to adulthood and beyond. If you have kids yourself, that goes for them as well. If you aren't there for your children, to teach them the things that schools don't teach because they can't mass produce the lessons to nearly the same quality that you can give them, they'll blame you and the school for having failed them. And they'd be right to lay the blame at your feet.
